Prayer letters for your family

Early in 2002, God impressed on me to do more than claim a verse or two for each member of my family. Over a period of several weeks, I approached the Lord in prayer and asked Him to lead my mind by the power of the Holy Spirit to voice His petitions for each of my children, my husband, and myself.

Then I sat down and wrote a prayer letter to the Lord. I asked Him for the things that came to my mind. The key element here is that I desired to voice God’s desires, not my own. I later went back and looked in my concordance to see if there were verses which matched up to what I had prayed. When I found one, I noted it in my letter in parentheses.

The Lord impressed on me that when we pray by the leading of the Holy Spirit over those whom we have been given authority to pray for, we are writing spiritual contracts which tie up the enemy and loose the Holy Spirit of God. These spiritual contracts are binding, legal, and powerful in the spiritual realm. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) They are translated into the physical realm in the perfect timing of the Heavenly Father.

I have attached a copy of the prayer God led me to pray for one of my sons so you can see what I’m talking about. You may think this may take too much time. It took perhaps an hour or so for each family member. I can’t think of a single thing I could do for them in an hour that would be as valuable as this. (Please note: my son was twelve when I wrote this for him. I have since gone before the Lord as he has entered different seasons of life.)

Dear Father,

I know You remember the day we gave our precious babies back to You. Father, little did we know the magnificent blessings You would give us through that simple prayer. They are Your children. Father, in obedience to Your leading, I come before You today to agree with you in prayer for this time in their earthly lives.

I bring my son before You, dear Father, and I ask humbly through the blood of Christ that You would lead me to voice the petitions that express Your desire for him.

Father, lead him in the paths of righteousness, for Your name’s sake (Ps. 23:3). May he fear no evil, and may Your rod and staff comfort him all the days of his life (Ps 23:4). May he dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Ps 23:6). Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask that you would raise him up to be a standard bearer for Your kingdom (Jeremiah 4:6). Be his rock, his strength and his power (2 Samuel 22:32). Make his feet like the feet of a deer, and strengthen his arms so they can bend a bow of bronze (2 Sam 22:34-35). If he ever finds himself in captivity, Father, empower him to rise up and defend himself (Esther 8:11-13).

Place your cloak around his shoulders (Isaiah 59:17). Father, place the helmet of salvation firmly on every part of his being and equip him with shield of faith, the belt of truth, and the breastplate of righteousness. May his whole armor be without weakness so that he may make a mighty stand against Your enemy (Ephesians 6:10,4-16). May he hold Your sword of the Spirit with reverence, and may he handle it with great ease. When he chases down the enemy, may they flee and fall by the sword. Give peace to whatever earthly land he lies down in, Father (Leviticus 26:6-8). May his feet be shod with the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15), which is as powerful as bronze and iron (Deuteronomy 33:25) so he can trod serpents and scorpions without being injured (Luke 10:19-20).

Father, my Father, may he love You with all his heart, all his soul, and all his strength all the days of his life (Deuteronomy 6:4). Jesus, keep him spotless and without blemish in his devotion to You (Ephesians 5:26-28). Keep him in Your perfect love so all fear is cast out (1 John 4:17-19).

In the name of Jesus Christ, make him the mighty warrior You desire him to be (1 Chronicles 12:25). Pour into him the water of life (Revelation 22:17), and breathe into him Your Holy Spirit (John 20:22). Anoint him with the oil of a thousand olive trees (Deuteronomy 8:8) and thus bless his earthly life with health, vitality, prosperity, and peace. May he stand tall, having been justified by faith in Jesus Christ, and may he be wrapped in the hope that comes only from above (Romans 5:1-5).

Father, when he needs correction, chasten him in Your love (Hebrews 12:7-11). Remind him that nothing can separate him from the love that is in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38-39). Be thou ever faithful to him, God (Deuteronomy 7:9).

Into your faithful hands, I commit him, Father. May your perfect will be done in his earthly life (Matthew 6:10) to bring glory to Your eternal kingdom (Matthew 6:13). In the name of Jesus Christ, Your holy son, I pray. Amen.

I love you, Father, and I humbly thank you for stirring my heart and guiding my mind to claim your provision for this precious boy. Stir me to know when I need to add to these petitions. Love, Susie
